Fushigi Yuugi, or Mysterious Play in English, is a tale about two girls who start reading an ancient Chinese book. It just so happens that this book is an incantation, that takes the reader into the world of the book. So when Yui Hongo and Miaka Yuuki start reading the book, they are magically absorbed into ancient China. However, when they get there they are greeted by an unpleasant surprise; slave traders looking for fine young women to trade. Luckily the two are rescued by Tamahome, a mysterious man with the Chinese character of an ogre on his forehead. Then just as things seem to be somewhat safe Yui is transported back to her world, and is now reading the story which Miaka is trapped in.
As Yui continues to read, she follows the story of the Suzaku No Miko (now Miaka), the one who has the power to call forth the God Suzaku, who can make all of the Miko's dreams come true. As Yui reads on she learns that Miaka must find the seven seishi of Suzaku which are marked with red characters on their body, like Tamahome has on his forehead. As it turns out Miaka and Yui are connected by their school uniforms, so what Miaka feels, Yui feels, even love. Miaka, who has suddenly fallen ill, then decides to return to her home world and see Yui. When she returns to her time Yui is not to be found, and Miaka figures out that she must have been zapped into the book. There is only one thing though, time acts differently in the book, and while Miaka has only been in present day Japan for several hours, Yui has been in ancient China for 3 months. Believe me a lot can happen in three months and the story takes a dramatic change. Now the best friends are forced to be enemies as this ancient tale plays out.
