In the Fushigi Yuugi universe, the sky is divided up into four quadrants, those being: north, south, east and west. Each of these has exactly seven constellation decicated to them. Each of the seishi are named them. This comes from the mythology of ancient China.

South: In the south is the Konan County. It is protected by the god Suzaku, a red phoenix. It represents the season of summer and the element of fire.

West: In the east is the Kutou Country. It is protected by the god Seiryuu, a blue dragon. It represents the season of autumn and the element of water.

North: In the north is the Hokkan County. It is protected by the god Genbu, a brown turtle. It represents the season of winter and the element of earth.

East: In the east is the Sailo County. It is protected by the god Byakko, a white tiger. It represents the season of spring and the element of wood.
