Set in the future, in the year 2029, Ghost in the Shell takes us into the world of the net, where information can be accessed easily by anyone. But, with this new technology, the definition of human has become shadowy. Humans, using new technology have become enhanced, with stronger bodies and computer augmented brains. The only thing separating humans from cybernetic frames is the presence of the ghost, the recognition of one’s “self”. Governments use these advances to play high tech diplomatic games, but when one of their top secret projects gets a mind of its own, their secrets are threatened to be exposed. When a cyber terrorist, the Puppet Master, begins hacking into people’s ghosts, the government calls upon Section 9.
Section 9 was started to fight the new forms of terrorism that developed with the technological advances of the age. Headed by the cybernetically enhanced Kusanagi and her team of specially selected personnel, Section 9 must find and stop the Puppet Master while digging trough the tangled web of lies and deceptions that hold the truth of the terrorist’s true identity.
